The government has made substantial changes to the Active Investor Plus Visa setting. These will become effective on 1 April. There will be greater opportunities for business to source investment from migrant investors, as the criteria for an acceptable immigration investment have widened considerably.

The broad requirement for an acceptable direct investment is one that contributes to the government’s economic strategy by delivering economic and other positive impacts for New Zealand.

These include:

• Businesses whose business model does not involve acquisition or ownership of property; or  
• Businesses that depend on property to deliver their business model, including but not limited to any of the following sectors:
  • technology
  • manufacturing
  • food and beverage
  • renewable energy
  • aged care
  • primary sector such as horticulture (including post-harvest infrastructure), forestry, agriculture or aquaculture
  • infrastructure (including tourism, film, health and education)

Migrant investors bring not only capital, but a wealth of talent and international connections. Many of these investors are already contributing their skills to business by joining company boards, making connections with offshore businesses, helping companies grow, and so much more.
