Immigration and employers have been busy
The AEWV scheme opened in May 2022 and since then a lot of applications related to working in New Zealand have been lodged.
- 127,228 AEWVs have been approved as at 23 September 2024.
- At 23 September 2024, 83,894 people hold a valid AEWV.
- 28,153 employers hold valid accreditation as at 30 September 2024.
- At 30 September 2024, 6,239 employers have let their accreditation expire.
- In 2024 Job Checks (labour market testing) for jobs on the Green List have the highest approval rate. Overall the approval rate for Job Checks has been high which proves it remains difficult to recruit skilled workers locally.
The number of new AEWVs being lodged reduced considerably since April 2024 when the government introduced standards for work experience and/or qualifications, English language and compulsory engagement with Work and Income for lower-skilled roles.
Together with a softer job market, this has led quickly to a shift in the net migration pattern. A record net migration gain of 136,400 in October 2023 reduced to 53,800 in August 2024.
