How’s your English?
In April the government introduced an English language standard for certain skill levels of Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applicants. It is not a particular high level someone needs to achieve for a pass but if English is not your native language it can feel scary to take an English language test.
Several residence categories require people aged 16 and over to meet a higher level of English. This applies to Skilled Migrant, Green List, Entrepreneur, Investor, Residence from Work and Parent. In some cases, it may be possible to pre-purchase the English language as an alternative to sitting and passing an English test. In other cases, it may be mandatory that the Principal applicant passes the test otherwise an application won’t be successful.
If you need to do an English test for a visa application here are some top tips:
- Many of the testing providers allow people to complete “mock” (pre test) exams. This will help you understand what level your English is at and what you need to do to improve.
- There are ESOL tutors who help people train for the exams. This is a great way to get prepared ahead of any exam. Talk to the testing providers for a recommendation.
- At home have a rule that everyone should speak English. The more time you spend talking, reading, and writing in English your skill level (and confidence) will improve.
- At work ask your boss to buddy you up with a strong English speaker who can help grow your confidence.
- Take a formal English language course. Most visas allow a person to complete a 3-month course in a calendar year without needing a student visa. Local community colleges or private language schools have courses throughout the country.
You just might be surprised that your English is better than you think – take a test and find out.
