160 points impossible?

Applying for residence under the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) seems almost impossible with the pass mark sitting at 160 points.
There are no signs the number of points required is about to come down any time soon. However, anyone already working in New Zealand in skilled employment may have other ways to achieve residence.
Last year more than 33% of residence applications that were declined were later approved on appeal by the Immigration and Protection Tribunal. That was either because Immigration NZ got it wrong, or there were special circumstances.
